The strain of the wedding crashers strain, dubbed WKR-8, is being brought to outdoor venues.
The strain was detected in Boulder and Boulder County, Colorado, and in San Francisco and Oakland, California.
In New York City, the strain has been detected at the City Hall Park, as well as at the Javits Center, the Museum of Natural History, and the Museum and Art Museum of Science and Industry.
It was first detected at a California public library in November.
In April, the first case was detected at another public library.
The new strain, known as WKR8, has been linked to a cluster of six deaths in New York.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 10,000 people in the U.S. are infected with the strain.
The hospital that reported the first patient has since moved.
It has been reported that the strain may have been released into the environment in California, where the strain was found at the San Francisco Zoo, the California Department of Forestry, and at a public pool.
